Industry Training Program

Atlantic Home Warranty is now responsible for the management, coordination and delivery of the Industry Training Program in Atlantic Canada. Some courses traditionally delivered through this Program will undergo extensive updating and renovations this year and will return in the 2008-2009 training season.

On-going learning is the key to success in any profession. Building is no exception. Technology is not only changing the materials and tools used in the industry, it is also changing the homebuyers’ knowledge, expectations and the way business is conducted.

Atlantic Home Warranty is committed to an on-going education and learning program that will help the industry in the Atlantic Region meet the continuing demands of a changing marketplace and the expectations of prospective customers. The courses offered through the Industry Training Program are designed for all players within the Atlantic Region. However, Atlantic Home Warranty members must comply with the terms and conditions of their membership obligations and associated course requirements. Some courses offered through the Industry Training Program are also required for certification under the Nova Scotia Home Builders Association Certified Housing Professional and Certified Renovation Professional Programs.

The goals of the Industry Training Program are to:

  • Help build strong managerial skills within the residential construction industry, enabling business owners to build and maintain a smooth and successful operation;
  • Provide key technical training that will reduce after-sales repairs and will keep industry members and stakeholders in tune with the state of the art technologies;
  • Enhance the players’ abilities in sales, marketing and after sales service;
  • Support and promote a standard of performance in the residential construction industry through continued professional development.

The Builder Workshops were first developed by CMHC and CHBA in the late 1980’s, with the objective of providing practical solutions to common construction problems. The entire Builder Series consists of more than a dozen modules, with additional workshops developed to respond to renovation issues. Five of these are mandatory training for Atlantic Home Warranty builders in their first year of membership. These sessions address the key problem areas in residential construction in the Atlantic Region that most commonly result in call-backs – problems that can be avoided by using the right materials and methods.

The two-day workshop is organized in a problem-cause-solution format, and makes use of multi-media technical material. Topics include:

  • Concrete foundations
  • Drywall applications
  • Doors and windows
  • Moisture problems
  • Ventilation
