Continuing Education Program
Atlantic Home Warranty is now responsible for the management, coordination and delivery of the Continuing Education Program in Atlantic Canada. Some courses traditionally delivered through this Program will undergo extensive updating and renovations and will return in the near future.
On-going learning is the key to success in any profession. Building is no exception. Technology is not only changing the materials and tools used in the industry, it is also changing the homebuyers’ knowledge, expectations and the way business is conducted.
Atlantic Home Warranty is committed to an on-going education and learning program that will help the industry in the Atlantic Region meet the continuing demands of a changing marketplace and the expectations of prospective customers. The courses offered through the the Program are designed for all players within the Atlantic Region. However, Atlantic Home Warranty members must comply with the terms and conditions of their membership obligations and associated course requirements. Some courses offered through the Continuing Ed Program are also required for certification under the Nova Scotia Home Builders Association Certified Housing Professional and Certified Renovation Professional Programs.
The Goals of the Continuing Education Program are to:
- Help build strong managerial skills within the residential construction industry, enabling business owners to build and maintain a smooth and successful operation;
- Provide key technical training that will reduce after-sales repairs and will keep industry members and stakeholders in tune with the state of the art technologies;
- Enhance the players’ abilities in sales, marketing and after sales service;
- Support and promote a standard of performance in the residential construction industry through continued professional development.

Atlantic Home Warranty On-going Education Requirements for Members
Atlantic Home Warranty is committed to the idea of a professional, well-informed and well-trained membership. To this end, AHW has introduced an education standard, which members are obliged to meet in order to maintain membership status. The following terms and conditions are applicable to, and form part of, the AHW Education Policy – 2006
- Members not completing the required NBC course within the first year of Membership will be removed from the registry of AHW.
- Members who fail to complete the NBC Update course within 12 months of the course being available in their area will be removed from the registry of the AHW.
- Members not completing the AHW Administration Workshop and the CMHC / CHBA Workshop Series within the first 2 years of Membership will pay an additional fee of $200.00 per enrolment for each home enrolled in the third year of membership.
- Members who fail to complete the AHW Administration Workshop and CMHC / CHBA Workshop Series after 3 years of Membership will be removed from the registry of AHW.
- Regular members who fail to take the Atlantic Housing Professional Series and the Better Built House within 2 years of becoming a regular member will pay an additional fee of $200.00 per home enrolled in the third year after they become a regular member.
- Regular members who fail to take the Atlantic Housing Professional Series and the Better Built House in the third year after they become regular Member will be removed from the registry of AHW.
- Members may appeal in writing to the management of AHW for relief from these conditions.
Management of AHW reserves the right to grant relief under special circumstances.

Jack Parsons (Flatrock, NL) Jack brings a lifetime of experience to our team. 35 years as a Builder and 25 as a Building Envelope and IAQ Specialist. As a member of CMHC’s International Training Team he has delivered seminars and training sessions as far away as China. Jack has been involved in projects in Ireland, Scotland, Japan and Iceland, to name a few. He has also assisted in the design and delivery of trainingthroughout Canada. He is proud to be a member of the AHW Training Team. |

W.M. Tex McLeod A successful developer with more than 25 years’ experience in housing and energy conservation, Tex McLeod stands out as one of Canada’s leading presenters on energy, housing and indoor air quality. He has delivered training to industry professionals in Canada, the U.S., South America, Europe and China. He has developed training materials for organizations such as CMHC, Ontario Hydro, the Atlantic Homebuilders Training Board and Ontario First Nations Technical Services. He is particularly well-versed in issues around indoor air quality, ventilation, sustainability as well as R-2000 / high efficiency building practices. |

Joe Waugh has been a builder and renovator specializing in energy efficiency for over thirty years. He was one of New Brunswick’s first group of R2000 builders and in 2003 won the Cement Association of Canada’s award for the most energy efficient R2000 house of the year. Joe has delivered training in most provinces and Nunavut on a wide range of topics related to residential housing and energy efficiency. |

Bob Wilson is a Journeyman Carpenter with Inter-Provincial Seal since 1976. He was a Municipal Building Inspector for the City of Fredericton, NB for 32 years, as well as a Contract Building Inspector for the Village New Maryland, NB for 16 years. He has been an Independent Contract Building Inspector & Consultant since January 2008, dealing with Building Code Compliance, Energy Efficiency, Plans Examination and On-Site Compliance Inspections. He has been a Course Facilitator for over twenty years to Building Officials, Fire Officials, Engineers, Architects, Builders, Developers, Private Home Inspectors, Real Estate Agents, Homebuilders and Homebuyers. He is the Chairperson on the National Research Council’s Task Group on Secondary Suites; Chairperson NRC’s Task Group Climbability of Guards; Member of the NRC ‘s Task Group on Stairs , Ramps, Handrails & Guards ; Member of the CSA Z-240 Committee Factory Built Homes since 1998. Bob is a member of the National Research Council Standing Committee Part 9 Houses and Small Buildings since 1996, and has recently been reappointed until 2014. |

Grant MacLeod (PEI)-As Co-owner of several family owned businesses ( Modular Homes, ICI Construction, Structural Steel Fabrication, Kitchen Cabinets and Millwork, Building Supplies, and Land Development),Grant brings a unique perspective to the Warranty Training Team. Grant's 45 years of construction experience include: Design and construction of over 1,000 modular homes and foundations as well as several hundred stick built homes and renovations. With a formal education that includes UPEI and Holland College and a "hands on"industry education of numerous seminars and certifications such as: HRAI design and Installation,TJI Design and Installation,R-2000,ICF ,Portland Cement Assoc.,AHBRSC Courses, to name a few. Grant is considered one of the leading experts in Residential Construction on PEI. HIs ongoing commitment to the betterment of our industry is reflected in his many hours of volunteer time: Former AHW Board Member,founding President of PEI Residential Construction Sector Council,10 year Board member and Chair of PEI Apprenticeship Board and Lifetime Achievement Award winner for 2008-2009 as well as PEI rep. at CAF,CCDA, and AAC. |

Hazen C.E. Spinney, B.Sc. (NB) is president of Spinney's Housing & Construction Ltd., which was established in 1977, with the company's office located in Fredericton, N.B. He is a UNB graduate with courses in business, Construction Engineering Management and sciences. His company includes Construction of Light Commercial buildings, building R-2000 Residential homes and Energy Efficient Renovations. He also performs Building Inspections, (Commercial/Residential) as well as Inspections for Litigation Purposes. His experience also includes, Project Management and scheduling, Property Management for banks (since January 1996) and providing Education, Training and Technical Transfers since 1975 in Canada and USA. |

Dennis Naugler, CET (NS) has 20 years experience in the industry as a designer, builder, project manager, inspector, energy advisor and R-2000 professional. He holds numerous certifications and licenses and sits on several industry boards and committees. He has developed and delivered training for AHWP, NSHBA, NRCAN and HRAI. His company has been well established as a leader in construction technology, design, management and energy efficiency. |

A comprehensive treatment of Canada’s 2005 Objective-Based National Building Code (NBC). The NBC is recognised in most of Canada as the minimum standard for technical provisions in design and construction of new buildings. The Code also applies to the demolition, renovation and alterations of existing buildings. This course will guide the student through the new Objective-Based approach, providing opportunities to use the Code in practical exercises and discussions. A final exam will be administered.

The Better Built House

Home buyers want comfortable, cost-efficient homes that are affordable to operate in the long term. It is vital for builders to keep abreast of changes to regulatory codes, products and materials and building systems as well as society’s needs and demographics. This five-day course will provide builders, renovators, inspectors and designers with a fresh appreciation of the science of building; reinforcing the concept of the house as a system. The course addresses the following areas:
- Introduction to the building code system
- How houses work: the house as a system
- Air and vapour barriers
- Rethinking basements, roofs and attics
- Energy efficient windows and doors, ER ratings, solar factors, installation issues
- Moisture and air quality; Ventilation systems, HRVs, F326
- Heating and cooling systems: DHW, gas/propane, oil and electric options
- Wood heating systems: safety and efficiency
- Plans and specifications; inspections; Canadian energy code

To run a successful residential construction company, there are a variety of essential activities that must be performed either by the home builder, an employee, contracted professionals or subcontractors. Successful builders and renovators maintain that if they do not have the required skill sin the described areas, their businesses are not likely to survive over the long term. Past participants have indicated that this course represents on of the most valuable investments they have made in training. The seven-day course provides a unique overview of each of these skills:

ATLANTIC BUILDER WORKSHOP SERIES
Duration: 2 days

The Builder Workshops were first developed by CMHC and CHBA in the late 1980’s, with the objective of providing practical solutions to common construction problems. The entire Builder Series consists of more than a dozen modules, with additional workshops developed to respond to renovation issues. Five of these are mandatory training for Atlantic Home Warranty builders in their first year of membership. These sessions address the key problem areas in residential construction in the Atlantic Region that most commonly result in call-backs – problems that can be avoided by using the right materials and methods.
The two-day workshop is organized in a problem-cause-solution format, and makes use of multi-media technical material. Topics include:
- Concrete foundations
- Drywall applications
- Doors and windows
- Moisture problems
- Ventilation
